Dental care in China starts with the problem you want assessed

Dental care in China is easier to plan when you describe your concern before choosing a treatment name. Perhaps chewing feels difficult, an existing restoration needs attention, or you want to discuss tooth alignment. Write down what matters most in daily life and what you hope a consultation will clarify. You do not need to decide on an implant, crown, or orthodontic appliance before speaking with a dentist.

Implants, orthodontics and restorative dentistry follow different pathways. Orthodontics concerns tooth position and bite; crowns, bridges and dentures are different restorative options. A smile photograph can help explain a preference, while choosing a pathway requires an assessment. Ask which specialty should review your concern and what alternatives deserve discussion.

[3][4]

Match the enquiry to a named clinic and specialty

The Dongpu outpatient clinic of Sun Yat-sen University Hospital of Stomatology has implant, orthodontic and restorative services. Start by asking which specialty would receive your enquiry and at which location. Availability of an appointment or a particular clinician needs its own answer; arrangements also differ between campuses. Save the clinic's full name with your appointment details so you know which site you are discussing.

Ask about registration documents, consultation language and how clinical explanations will be communicated. Explain travel and home follow-up constraints, including any companion's role in interpreting or organising appointments. Your preferences should remain central. The implant department at the Hospital of Stomatology, Sun Yat-sen University also has expertise in digitally guided implant surgery. Ask which clinic would assess that option, as this department-level expertise has not been assigned specifically to Dongpu.

[1][5]

Prepare a record that explains what has already happened

Collect available dental reports, original imaging, and a brief account of previous work, including when and where it was undertaken. Describe current discomfort in your own words without trying to label its cause. Ask which files the receiving dentist would find useful and whether additional records should be requested from your usual clinic. Keep originals alongside any translation so that details can be checked.

Include your medical history, current medicines and relevant allergies. Explain travel limits or difficulty returning for repeated visits. Implant assessment includes an oral examination and imaging; photographs cannot replace them. Ask how to send existing records and what to bring.

[2][1]

Discuss implant assessment before discussing a final restoration

Implant suitability depends on general health, smoking, oral hygiene, gum health and local bone conditions. Use these factors to prepare questions for an individual assessment. Ask which findings matter in your case, whether other oral health concerns need attention first, and how the alternatives compare.

An implant and the visible replacement tooth are different parts of care. Implant-supported restorations may involve a crown, bridge or overdenture. Ask for a written outline of assessment, preliminary care and the eventual restoration, with questions that must wait for examination. The same department has soft-tissue and bone augmentation expertise. If tissue conditions come up, ask whether additional stages need discussion before you plan flights around the proposed restoration.

[2][5]

Plan orthodontic reviews and retainers

Orthodontics starts with assessment and may involve imaging or scans, continuing appointments during treatment and retainers afterwards. If you live abroad, ask how this continuing care would work: who would provide reviews, how adjustments would be arranged, and what to do if your location or travel availability changes.

If you already have an appliance, ask whether the proposed appointment is an assessment, a continuation request, or a discussion of alternatives. Seek a clear answer about who accepts responsibility for any continuing treatment. Do not assume that a dentist at home will automatically take over a plan started elsewhere. Ask that clinician in advance what records and professional discussion would be necessary before considering a handover.

[3]

Separate custom fabrication from the first consultation

Crowns, bridges, dentures and other replacement options address different restorative needs. A custom restoration can involve fabrication and a later visit, so the first consultation may be one stage of the process. Ask what the proposed restoration is intended to address, how alternatives compare, and which decisions depend on examining your mouth.

Ask which milestones would need your presence and which would depend on clinical findings or fabrication arrangements. If a temporary option is discussed, request an explanation of its purpose, limitations, and follow-up needs from the dentist. Coordinate your itinerary around a confirmed individual plan rather than assuming that receiving a proposed outline means the final restoration will be ready before you return home.

[4]

Agree on responsibilities across borders

Long-term cleaning, dental review and maintenance are part of implant and orthodontic care. Ask which continuing appointments the proposed plan needs and who will provide them. A coordinator may organise contact; the treating dentist explains the clinical plan and the response to concerns. Save both contacts with their responsibilities so you know whom to approach.

Before committing to care abroad, ask your home dentist whether they can review the records and discuss future maintenance. If a system or material is proposed, find out what identifying details to retain and what another clinician needs; clinics differ in the restorations or appliances they can maintain. The department's clinicians also have expertise in preventing and treating peri-implantitis. Bring up concerns about existing implants and agree who would provide continuing care after you return home.

[2][3][5]

Prepare records for the next dentist

Request the summary, images, appliance details and maintenance plan. Clarify unfinished work, contacts, remote discussion limits and translation; retain originals.

Keep each family member's records separate. Ask the team to distinguish completed stages from work still planned, and record what was assessed, what was done, the reasons for those choices and unresolved questions. Take that account to the next dentist so the handover includes more than before-and-after photographs.

[2][3][4]

Find the address on your dental appointment

The Hospital of Stomatology, Sun Yat-sen University has several licensed addresses registered with Guangzhou's health authority. Match the street, building and floor to your appointment, then ask the receiving team which department and clinic to go to.

Lingyuan West Road: number 56

56 Lingyuan West Road, Guangzhou, is one of the registered addresses of the Hospital of Stomatology, Sun Yat-sen University. Save the complete address, then ask the receiving team for your entrance and clinic.

Dongpu: number 3 Dongpu Dama Road

Another registered address is 3 Dongpu Dama Road, Tianhe, Guangzhou, separate from Lingyuan West Road. Match the site to your appointment before choosing transport or accommodation.

[6]

Huali Road: specified floors in the west tower

The hospital also has a registered address on floors 1–12 and 19–22 of the west tower at 59 Huali Road, Tianhe. For this appointment, ask the receiving team for the exact tower, floor, clinic location and time, then plan your arrival around those details.

Questions for your planning conversation

  • Which specialty and clinic should assess my main concern?
  • Which existing records would be helpful?
  • What decisions require an examination?
  • Which stages require another appointment?
  • Who can provide maintenance after I return home?

Common questions

Can the first visit deliver my final crown?

A custom crown may need fabrication and a later visit after assessment. Ask the dentist about those stages and delivery before setting your return date.

Can orthodontics be completed in a single trip?

Orthodontic care involves continuing appointments and may require retainers afterwards. Discuss who would handle those responsibilities across borders before choosing a plan.

Will my home dentist maintain any implant system?

Do not assume this. Ask the home clinician about the proposed system, necessary records, and whether they can provide the care being discussed.
